In less than half a century, the population of Fagnières went from 700 to 5,000. From farming community it became a residential town with a pronounced commercial vocation. There are two schools of thought on the origin of the name: does Fagnières come from "fargniers" meaning black oak or from "fagne", meaning marshland vegetation. The little town which includes a racecourse and the Mont Choisy leisure centre, places great emphasis on the environment. There is a specific effort to bring the Petit Vouet back to life, a stream which used to supply water to the gardens in the valley before the construction of the railway. The path that follows the future riverbed will be developed as a footpath.
