‘1 fleur’ village in bloom
Nanteuil swapped the second part of its name – “La Fosse”, meaning pit or grave – for the more noble title of “La Forêt”. It is this forest that walkers discover on the Balade de Lucie, a 3 km loop around the top of the village offering beautiful panoramic views of the Ardre Valley. The walk leaves from the picnic area (with barbecue) near the working washing-place and, on the way, you can admire the Romanesque church and 10th-century roadside crucifix, whose first stone is said to have been laid by King Dagobert. Two country gîtes and a beautifully decorated converted forge offer accommodation. Finally, the Jardin Botanique de la Presle is well worth a visit. This paradise, which carries out teaching, conservation and scientific activities, is rightly labelled an “Outstanding Garden”.
