CHAVOT-COURCOURT

The pretty church of Saint-Martin de Chavot half-way up the hill right in the vineyards and surrounded by the village cemetery: the image can be seen from the road below and is often used to illustrate the beauty of the wine-growing Champagne region. Originally, the village encircled the religious edifice, but then settled higher up and closer to its neighbour, Courcourt, thus becoming one single village (370 inhabitants). This area is well-known to hikers who love the superb walks and the magnificent views unfolding towards the plain, especially towards the Television relay much higher up. They often gather on the picnic area near the church and admire the very fine restored washhouse in Courcourt.
