In the past, Vitry-le-François was renowned for inland water shipping. A festival is still held there today in its name.
Water transport activities are still in evidence on the approach to Port de Plaisance, where the two canals meet: the one from the Marne to the Rhine and the one from the Marne to the Saône.
In Vitry-le-François itself, the Marne is only navigable by canoe. However, if you walk alongside it you'll see some amazing sights and feel at one with nature.
